Purifying the air with plants, the green solution of Fabbrica dell’Aria

To combat pollution, this system exploits the filtration capabilities of plants by cleaning the air in enclosed spaces: the first installation is in the new Green Media Lab headquarters in Milan.

The lockdown and the enormous amount of time we are forced to spend within the walls of our home have highlighted the need to purify the air and the problem of pollution inside homes and offices . Recent studies have in fact shown how the air present in closed spaces is considerably more polluted than in open spaces, forcing us to reflect on how we can improve the situation. Instead of resorting to an air purifier , there is a simple and natural way to purify and freshen the air: build a greenhouse with plants that can remove pollutants in living, commercial and work spaces. This is the case of Fabbrica dell’Aria, the revolutionary system designed by Stefano Mancuso and PNAT which was recently installed in the Milan office of Green Media Lab , a media relations & digital company specialized in communication and strategic consultancy in the areas of sustainability and CSR, outdoor, lifestyle and healthy food. After the installation two years ago at the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence, this is the first prototype installed in Milan that combines the potential of technology with the filtration capabilities of plants: thanks to botanical purification, the installation makes it possible to absorb and degrade the air pollutants typically present in buildings and modern cities up to 98% . The structure, which occupies an area of about 25 square meters, was built in such a way as to allow the air to enter inside a glass wall, pass through a cavity under the floor, flow into the tanks where the plants are planted, and then return, purified, to the ‘environment. When pollutants pass through the growing medium, they are retained and therefore degraded by the plant roots . The remaining pollutants are absorbed by the leaves and converted into nutrients.

«We are proud to be the first to have installed the Fabbrica dell’Aria at our new headquarters. The project was born thanks to the collaboration with the scientist Stefano Mancuso and the actor Giovanni Storti – of the trio Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, partner of Green Media Lab – two people from different worlds but united by the same interest in issues related to the environment . We have always communicated sustainability and social responsibility, also focusing a lot on the positive changes that we can all implement to safeguard our planet »said Daniele Denegri, founder and CEO of Green Media Lab .

The installation of the Fabbrica dell’Aria is part of an approach linked to sustainability at all levels which also concerns the new Milan headquarters of Green Media Lab, in via Tertulliano. The company has in fact set itself the goal of creating a working environment that overturns the common concept of office, transforming it into a stimulating place, able to foster creativity, productivity and attract new talents. The furnishings of the new headquarters have been created by combining unique pieces with a sustainable design with accessories derived from recycled, reused and recycled materials. Thanks to the partnership with Bosch, all the appliances installed, are functional to the internal project of Green Media Lab on the reduction of waste, whether it is energy, water or food. The new hub, a structure that develops over two floors used for responsible and smart work, is designed as a meeting place for the internal team of the company and open to stakeholders who want to share projects and ideas in a conscious and responsible business perspective .
